What is CLAT and eligibility

  • CLAT (COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST-Common Law Admission Test) is an entrance examination conducted for admission to the study of law.
  • For CLAT you must have passed 12th class
  • Must have 45% marks in 12th class
  • If you have SC category certificate then you can give this exam even with 40% marks.
  • There is no age limit for studying law

 

 

Enrollment

After completion of LL.B or BA LL.B degree, you have to get yourself enrolled in your State Bar Council, after this you are issued a Provisional Certificate & ID Card and from that day you can work as an advocate. In this you can do advocacy work for 2 years and during this period of 2 years it is mandatory for you to clear the AIB (All India Bar Examination) exam. After clearing the exam, you will get permanent job. ID is issued which makes you a permanent advocate and can practice independently.

 

Experience

To become a lawyer of the Supreme Court of India, one has to apply and at the time of applying, the person should be practicing in the High Court or District Court of any state and that lawyer should have at least 5 years of experience as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. To become one one must have 5 years of experience and practice.

 

INTERNSHIP

To become an advocate on record, you have to apply to the Supreme Court, get your name registered in the list of Supreme Court lawyer nomination and undergo training for 1 year under a senior advocate of the Supreme Court. In this way, you should have a total experience of 6 years for Supreme Court nomination. For the application process you have to fulfill certain criteria which include

  1. To become an Advocate on Record, one should have at least 5 years of experience in the District Court or High Court of any state and should be practicing till that time.
  2. The senior advocate under whom one year’s training is being taken should be an advocate on record for at least 5 years.

 

Advocate of record exam,  

To get one’s name registered in the list of lawyers of the Supreme Court of India and to become an Advocate on Record, an examination is conducted by the Supreme Court Bar Association. One has to pass this examination through which it is known whether the candidate is eligible for that post or not.

After completing the examination of Advocate on Record, a chamber has to be registered in the Supreme Court and a law clerk has to be hired in that office. After completion of all these processes, you are accepted as Advocate on Record from that day. You can plead your client’s case and get justice for the client by the Supreme Court.
